 Pen Shell Before Polishing |
History: Pen shells are found on many of Florida's beaches. They are approximately ten inches long and somewhat fan shaped. They are not desirable to collectors. Overall they have a rather scruffy appearance. But underneath an layer of shell material is a layer of iridescent colors. I noticed these colors and knew I could clean this layer off. I have rock lapidary equipment for cutting and shaping stones. Initially I hoarded these shells to make Dragons with them. I acquired a diamond band saw later that enabled me to design more diverse and detailed pieces. Each tiny piece of shell has been cut & then further shaped to be used in various places to create the shell art items. It is labor intensive work but fun to see what level I can take it to.
